The Art of Philately Project- about art, community culture, mountains, stamps…and more

Usually, I’m at a vantage point (to see  lovely peaks like these)  closer to a road than the top of a mountain.
As part of the Art of Philately project, I decided that a brief artist residency in a place that wouldn’t necessarily see portions of the public who are involved in the arts; and one that would of course relate in some way to the subject matter for the images would be appropriate.
So after mulling it over for a bit, the perfect spot occurred to me.
The Kokanee Glacier Hut in Kokanee Glacier park just north of Nelson is a  spot I’ve wanted to see for quite some time.
So, with the go ahead from the Alpine Club of Canada (who have been very helpful and supportive of this idea as a pilot project) I have started planning the event.
It was to happen this summer, but due to the fact that there are only 24 hours in the day (on my end) and its a popular spot to head to (reservations required, and I now know, its booked up months in advance…) we have planned the dates, but they won’t be until 2009…
Which will leave me plenty of time to practice hiking ( more than a quarter of a mile…) with a heavy (read: full of art supplies) pack so that I dont collapse gasping once I head up there…
So mark your calendars and reserve your spots!
July 13-16 of 2009 will see me up there with pastels in hand and happy to be there painting and exploring the area with whomever comes along .
************************************************************************
And the search continues for more images for the project. To that end , on August 1st I will be enjoying the music at Kaslo Jazzfest and working on sketches of Mt. Loki and the rest of the “backdrop” to the music festival.
Might even see some of you there. Cheers til next time.DB.

That’s quite a striking photo, Deb, and it brings to mind the art imitating life thing. Isn’t it interesting how those far mountains look rather unreal compared to the grasses in the foreground? To get all philisophicalish, we can only deal with our lives in the same way – that which is right in front of us has the clearest focus and is most “real.”
