Lessons & Plans & a Progress Report…

Center of Creation

Well the snow, which has been threatening to do something serious for quite some time, is finally making good. It is dumping as I write this with no signs of stopping for quite some time. Then the weather is  due to warm up in a few days which of course makes seasoned back country types….wary-or it should if they have any brains…. Avalanches are as much a part of this mountain culture as are the many people who go out there to enjoy the beauty of winter (and skiing and snowmobiling and snowboarding and and and…) in the back country.

Avalanches are little reminders to us to retain a healthy respect for Ma Nature. In the mean time, I have been squirrelled away in the cabin, working on yet another offshoot to the Art of Philately project. By the new year, I hope to have posted here a set of Lesson Plans for use by any and all who care to read them.

They are focused on the 8-10 yr old age range, and   are a more formalized version of my last post (“kids! try this at home”). It is certainly a big learning curve, designing a lesson plan. I give huge kudos to my friend Charlotte, herself a teacher, educator, and most importantly – a Mother- who has given me great feedback on what information to include in these plans.

Creation of  the original artwork for the Art of Philately exhibit continues, much more quickly over the last few weeks as I have had the good fortune to be on vacation since early December. Ive been having a grand time trying out various combinations of materials that will (or wont) work with pastel and am gradually getting a good idea of what works best. Unfortunately, since I have been at home here in the woods, I have not had the chance to digitize some of the pictures I’ve completed, to add to this post. Patience! They will be posted in the new year.

However, I am able to add in here (at the start of this post)  an updated pic of the “Centre of Creation” (as I lovingly refer to my studio….). I am currently not working in there (it’s still not insulated) but it was stuccoed this summer and now looks almost like a real building. Hooray! Top coat of stucco will go on in the spring of 09. Stay tuned, keep shoveling, happy days in 2009!

Kids! Try this at home…

…or anyone else in the family for that matter.

I was talking with my friend Peter – world famous snow, sand and ice sculptor (yes, really!) and telling him about the Art of Philately project when it occurred to me that what he dows would work really well as stamps. And he does 3 dimensional art!.

All you need is a good photo of your artwork to start with.

Proceed to the Canada Post website where you will find the page for the picture postage program. There are fairly clear instructions as to how you upload your image and send it off to the elves at Canada Post. Then you make yourself a good big cup of hot chocolate and wait…a few weeks. Then, as if by magic, a package will arrive on your doorstep with YOUR ARTWORK on REAL stamps that you can use to mail REAL letters and cards to family and friends.

Just one more way to put all that creativity youve been storing up to good use…It does cost something (by the way) but the pleasure and satisfaction of seeing your artwork professionally (and usefully) put to work seems to be worth it..This is how I will be reproducing my artwork as part of the Art of Philately project, come springtime.

Cant wait!. Now back to shoveling snow.It has finally arrived.

More soon.cheers,DB Oh yeah; if youd like to see some of Peters fabulous creations go to: www.snowsculpture.com . Have fun!
